In this paper is carried out a study of heat treatments and characterization to a modified medium carbon Steel with an addition of 3wt% of Chrome. For the characterization of steel began with the chemical composition through the atomic emission spectroscopy test
where it was found that is an Steel that is accommodates in 4XXX series of AISI-SAE. Also
it was performed a X-ray diffraction test (XRD) to know the compounds formed by the 3wt% addition of chrome. Later it was performed the metallography (inclusions
phases present and grain size) and hardness and microhardness test of the supplied modified steel to observe the casting microstructure and know the influence this had on the mechanical properties of the material. Then it was performed hardenability and tensile strength tests. All tests were made following ASTM respective. Taking into account the alloying elements presents in the modified steel
CCT y TTT diagrams of the similar Steel in their chemical composition and the size of the piece
it was performed the design and application of the heat treatments of annealing
temper and tempering. After this
it was performed a metallographic and hardness analysis for each of heat treatment pieces. Finally
it was performed a comparison between the modified Steel in studied and the AISI-SAE 4140 Steel of the heat treatment performed.

description En el presente trabajo se lleva a cabo un estudio de tratamientos térmicos y caracterización a un acero de medio carbono modificado con la adición de 3% en peso de Cromo. Para la caracterización del acero se inició con la composición química por medio del ensayo de espectroscopia de emisión atómica, en donde se encontró que es un acero que se acomoda en la serie 4XXX dada por AISI-SAE, también se realizó un análisis de difracción de rayos X (DRX) para conocer los compuestos formados por la adición de 3% en peso de Cromo, posteriormente se realizó la metalografía (inclusiones, fases presentes y tamaño de grano) y ensayos de dureza y microdureza del acero suministrado para observar la microestructura de colada y conocer la influencia que esta tenía en las propiedades mecánicas del material, seguidamente se realizaron ensayos de templabilidad y de resistencia a la tracción; todas las pruebas se hicieron siguiendo las normas ASTM respectivas. Teniendo en cuenta los elementos aleantes presentes en el acero modificado, diagramas CCT y TTT de aceros similares en su composición química y el tamaño de las piezas, se realizó el diseño y aplicación de los tratamientos térmicos de recocido, temple y revenido, posterior a ello, se realizó un análisis de metalografía y dureza para cada una de las piezas tratadas térmicamente, finalmente se realizó una comparación del acero en estudio con un acero AISI-SAE 4140 de los tratamientos térmicos realizados.
