Obtaining asphalt from petroleum distillation is a complex process with a lot of energy use and is not an ecologic process. Considering that Colombian heavy crudes are an alternative raw material in order to get asphalt binders
Corasfaltos Corporation has achieved developments in processes that tend to raise the viscosity of those heavy crudes with the purpose of giving them properties to be useful in road construction. In this research
three Colombian heavy crudes were selected and were practiced different modifications experiments in laboratory with different components in order to determine the right composition that give them basic properties of asphalt binders. In order to prove that the method is technically feasible
scale-up tests were practiced in a batch reactor and three asphalt binders were obtained. According to the actual laws
the asphalt binders were characterized with tests that show their quality
suitability and performance. The tests were penetration
ductility
softening point
dynamic viscosity and aging by RTFOT and PAV. Besides
two complementary tests were practiced: determination of complex module and stiffness. As a result
the asphalt binders presented good physicochemical characteristics
which would allow their use as asphalt binders in second and third order ways
for example in nearly zones where those heavy crudes are produced. This investigation is part of the Project 608669148571
economically funded by Pavimentar S.A. and executed by Corasfaltos through the call 691-2014 of Colciencias.
