Several contaminants can be found in opportunity crude oils
e.g. metals such as calcium and naphthenic acid. Under certain conditions
these substances create calcium naphthenate. The exploitation of these hydrocarbons propose several challenges in both production and refining lines. This is because resulting salts are settled in heat exchangers
separators and pipelines among others. These salts generate stable emulsions that prevent proper crude dehydration
and are capable of deactivating expensive catalysts and producing corrosive acids in distillation columns. The afore mentioned
can result in reduced equipment life-span and production shutdowns with costly consequences. The subject of this assessment is to propose a suitable additive to prepare an extractor solution using software for the decision making process in consideration of cost
solubility and operational risks. Initially
this document was drafted with experimental curves using opportunity crude oil from Colombian mature fields. The samples used were 12.6 degrees API with a high content of calcium. The influence of pH
percentage of extractor solution and the concentration were evaluated when finding the efficiency of calcium removal. Also
metal concentration was measured using the spectroscopy atomic absorption (AAS) technique for the chelating agent previously selected. In conclusion
results show optimal conditions to improve calcium removal percentages as per operation conditions for a Colombian mature field.
