Energy is a valuable resource that can not be wasted. Cooling towers are equipments developed to dissipate large amounts of energy at a reasonable cost. Cooling tower at the Catalytic Cracking II of Barrancabermeja’s refinery actually evidences high consumption of energy by the continuous operation of all of its fans
therefore
it was decided to perform a thermodynamic diagnosis and present recommendations to optimize its overall efficiency and
thus
contributing to an energy saving in the process. The liquid/gas relation (L/G)
the characteristic curve of the tower TE-4401 and their respective cells were obtained. Merkel’s number (KaV/L) was also obtained using Tchebycheff’s numeric method
and the current thermic conditions of the tower were analyzed. It was found that the tower dissipates all the energy it receives
being influenced by the KaV/L ratio and physical conditions
however
to find an approximation of what would be its optimum performance
the ratio L/G provides flows that must give the best efficiency. Prolonging the proper functioning of the tower depends on a continuous and preventive maintenance of this.
