A viability study for evaluate the implementation of gasifier stoves for food cooking was carried out in the TOSOLY Ecological Farm
in association with the “Foundation for Tropical Sustainable Agriculture Production – UTA” in the town of Guapotá (Santander). The thermal efficiency - measured with the Boiling Water Test protocol (WBT) in its version 4.2.3 – of a forced convection gasifier stove prototype was evaluated using coffee stems and sugarcane bagasse as fuel. The gasifier stoves offer several advantages for use in cooking
as they are able to burn gas without producing smoke unlike the conventional solid fuel burning. The Water Boiling Test protocol consists in a basic simulation of the cooking process in order to measure how efficiently a stove uses the fuel to heat the water into a pot; this test also can determine the amount of emissions produced during the process. The factorial design experiment allowed to find the best variable combination in order to maximize the thermal efficiency of the process. The influence of variables such as biomass type
air flow and particle size was evaluated during the design. It was also considered the influence of the moisture in the biomass selected in relation with the traditional dry process carried out in the farm greenhouse.
