Description
Summary:The tutoring program of the School of Basic Sciences at Universidad de La Salle was born from the need to address the potential causes of the high school dropout rates during the first two years of study. It is associated with academic spaces managed by the School of Basic Sciences and it was estimated to be of approximately 25% by the Center for Services, Promotion and Student Support (SPAE, 2008) of the Vice Rector’s Office for Promotion and Human Development. At an institutional level, it is globally manifested as four (4) out of every ten (10) students dropping out over the course of ten (10) semesters on average (Vicerrectoría de Promoción y Desarrollo Humano, VPDH, 2013). This program was proposed as a project in 2009 and was part of the 2010–2015 Institutional Development Plan. In this proposal, we stress the importance of providing academic support to students by making visible the independent work in the credit system adopted years ago by the university. This academic support is intended to have a positive effect on the academic performance and on reducing school dropout rates. At the beginning, the tutoring program favored organizing the students’ free time and, at the same time, it encouraged them to create a culture of study in terms of techniques and habits. Since then, the program has been working on increasing its coverage and on having a positive impact on academic performance, particularly of students in a condition of academic risk and susceptible to dropping out of school.
