description El presente estudio emerge de las experiencias personales y profesionales de la investigadora como aprendiz y maestra de inglés, y su propósito es comprender cómo este proceso y las competencias de los estudiantes se encuentran relacionadas con la exposición externa al inglés como lengua extranjera que ellos pueden tener. Para ello fue llevado a cabo un profundo análisis sobre cómo estos factores externos pueden determinar el éxito en las experiencias de aprendizaje dadas en el aula. Gracias a la aplicación de algunas encuestas, cuestionarios y entrevistas a un grupo seleccionado de participantes entre los 10 y 11 años de primaria en una escuela local, fue posible reflexionar sobre sus hábitos de estudio, recursos, percepciones, roles familiares y otros factores relevantes relacionados con la exposición al lenguaje, identificando su relación con la competencia lingüística. Por medio de un análisis temático se obtuvieron hallazgos importantes relacionados con la auto-motivación en términos de autoconfianza, expectativas y conciencia; adicionalmente fue posible identificar factores como la motivación externa relacionada con el apoyo familiar como otros medios de exposición al lenguaje que pueden determinar la destreza de los estudiantes para aprender una lengua extranjera.

A profound analysis about how these external factors can be determinant for the success of their learning experience in the classroom was addressed, and thanks to the application of some surveys, questionnaires and interviews to a selected group of participants between 10-11 years age from elementary in a local school, it was possible to reflect upon student’s habits, resources, perceptions, family roles and other relevant factors concerning language exposure, identifying its relation with the language competence.
