Arugula is a horticultural species that has provoked interest as a gourmet product, being the edible portions the fresh young leaves. The development of its production technology, the knowledge of its growth and development for tropical conditions are lacking. According to these aspects, the following objectives were proposed: establishment of the growth indices, the leaf area, the fresh and dry weight; determination of growth rates for both environments: relative growth rate, rate of crop growth, net assimilation rate, leaf area index; ascertainment of growth curves and the mathematical equations that best fit the relationship between growth rates and environmental conditions. 972 plants of Eruca sativa Mill. were placed under greenhouse and free exposure conditions, during two cultivation cycles, during the second term of 2006 at the U.D.C.A,s Teaching-Research area. For the growth indices data, each 15 days destructive samples were taken from plants in complete competition; equally, to obtain information on the growth rates, continuous samples were obtained. Environmental information was captured to construct the mathematical equations. The collected information to determine possible differences in the growth variables was submitted to a “t” test, using SAS. The results showed a better performance of arugula under greenhouse conditions, since the main achieved growth rates were enhanced. Environmental conditions had a major influence on plant growth. Greenhouse conditions are recommended for planting arugula, since they represent optimal growth conditions. |

Greenhouse conditions are recommended for planting arugula, since they represent optimal growth conditions.La rúgula es una hortaliza que ha empezado a despertar interés como producto gourmet, por sus porciones comestibles en fresco, las hojas jóvenes; sin embargo, falta desarrollar tecnología para su producción y conocer sus características de crecimiento y desarrollo en nuestro medio. Se buscó, por lo tanto, establecer los índices de crecimiento de la especie, tales como área foliar, peso fresco y peso seco; elaborar las tasas de crecimiento para dos ambientes, es decir, tasa de crecimiento relativo, tasa de crecimiento del cultivo, tasa de asimilación neta e índice de área foliar; elaborar las curvas de crecimiento y establecer las ecuaciones matemáticas que mejor ajustarán la relación entre índices y condiciones ambientales. Se sembraron 972 plantas de Eruca sativa Mill. en invernadero y a libre exposición durante dos ciclos, en el segundo semestre de 2006, en la Unidad Docente Investigativa de la U.D.C.A. Se tomaron muestras destructivas cada 15 días sobre plantas en competencia completa, para obtener la información de los índices de crecimiento y muestras de seguimiento, para elaborar las tasas de crecimiento. Se obtuvo la información ambiental, para construir las ecuaciones matemáticas. La información recolectada se sometió a una prueba de “t”, utilizando el SAS, para determinar posibles diferencias en las variables. Los resultados dieron un mejor comportamiento de la rúgula bajo invernadero, ya que las principales tasas de crecimiento presentaron un mejor desempeño. Las condiciones ambientales ejercieron una influencia importante en el crecimiento vegetal.
