description La producción de organismos acuáticos es una de las industrias pecuarias de más rápido crecimiento. Para satisfacer la demanda de productos acuícolas, es necesario que la producción se expanda a una capacidad de 109 millones de toneladas anuales. La intensificación de la acuicultura y aumento de densidades son estrategias para incrementar las cifras de producción. el hacinamiento de animales favorece la aparición y propagación de microorganismos oportunistas, que predisponen a la presentación de enfermedades y como consecuencia mortalidades. Para tratar las enfermedades se usan productos que en varios países están prohibidos, entre los que se encuentran antibióticos que causan residualidad en el músculo. Los productos fitoterapéuticos se convierten en alternativas para los tratamientos tradicionalmente implementados en la acuicultura. Esta revisión tiene por objetivo analizar la literatura actual sobre el uso del ajo (Allium sativum) en los principales organismos acuáticos producidos a nivel mundial. Se observa que el ajo es usado como estimulador del sistema inmune, promotor de crecimiento y propiedades que mejoran el desempeño productivo, entre otras funciones. Las principales especies de peces son carpas, tilapias y salmónidos y en los crustáceos los camarones, en especial el camarón de patas blancas (Litopenaeus vannamei). Se puede concluir que el ajo puede ser usado por sus diferentes propiedades en la producción de especies acuícolas, principalmente para mejorar la productividad y tratar enfermedades.

El consumo per cápita de pescado aumenta anualmente y se pronostica que el aumento sea continuo. Para satisfacer la demanda de productos acuícolas, es necesario que la producción se expanda a una capacidad de 109 millones de toneladas anuales. La intensificación de la acuicultura y aumento de densidades son estrategias para incrementar las cifras de producción. el hacinamiento de animales favorece la aparición y propagación de microorganismos oportunistas, que predisponen a la presentación de enfermedades y como consecuencia mortalidades. Para tratar las enfermedades se usan productos que en varios países están prohibidos, entre los que se encuentran antibióticos que causan residualidad en el músculo. Los productos fitoterapéuticos se convierten en alternativas para los tratamientos tradicionalmente implementados en la acuicultura. Esta revisión tiene por objetivo analizar la literatura actual sobre el uso del ajo (Allium sativum) en los principales organismos acuáticos producidos a nivel mundial. Se observa que el ajo es usado como estimulador del sistema inmune, promotor de crecimiento y propiedades que mejoran el desempeño productivo, entre otras funciones. Las principales especies de peces son carpas, tilapias y salmónidos y en los crustáceos los camarones, en especial el camarón de patas blancas (Litopenaeus vannamei).
