The influence of South American countries on space activities and space policy will be surveyed. The military use of satellites will not be considered in depth, except to provide a context for the development of satellite technology. Rather, this paper focusses on satellites – Earth observation / remote sensing and communications, on the impact they have had, and continue having in our daily lives.
