The text does not pretend to present a narrative or a history, and instead strives only to highlight trade, from a traditional and natural law perspective, as a powerful tool for progress and for social and economic expansion. Historical records show the inventiveness and audacity of some ancient civilizations that stood apart because of their propensities for commer ce, such as India, Egypt, Phoenicia, Carthage, Greece and Rome. The article will examine each of these societies, then turn to trade in the Middle Ages, and continue until it reaches modernity.Este artículo constituye un recorrido por la historia de la evolución del comercio, con el fin de reseñar sus restricciones más visibles. El texto carece de pretensiones narrativas e históricas y solo se esfuerza por relievar la causa del comercio desde su perspectiva tradicional e iusnaturalista, como poderoso instrumento de progreso y de expansión social y económica. Los registros históricos reseñan la inventiva y la audacia de algunas civilizaciones antiguas que despuntaron por su vocación mercantil, como la hindú, la egipcia, la fenicia, la cartaginense, la griega y la romana.
