Determination of time of pregnancy and embryonic development of Wistar rat (Rattus norvegicus) in a bioterium from Cali (Colombia)

Aim: To define the behavior of the gestational time and the embryological development of the Wistar Rat (Rattus Novergicus) in a vivarium from Cali (Colombia). Materials and methods: Descriptive observational cross-section study in which pregnant 22 female of Wistar rat, with 5 to 8 months old and w...

Materials and methods: Descriptive observational cross-section study in which pregnant 22 female of Wistar rat, with 5 to 8 months old and weight of 150 to 200 grams. Ones it was confirmed the pregnancy; a female was euthanized each day until completing the 22 days of gestation. The uterine horns of each female were removed and macroscopically (day 11) the number of resorbed embryos and embryos in development were identified. Results: The evidence suggests that every female had litters between 10 and 12 embryos in development, in contrast with this study which average was of 6 embryos per litter (2 resorbed embryos and 4 embryos in development). Embryos in the right uterine horn have less probability of survival in all the time of tracking was observed. Conclusions: One of the main problems of designing studies about the embryological and fetal development with murine biomodels results at the moment of precising the standard number of resorbed embryos and embryos in development in each litter. In this study was associated to the age of the female rats and the stress from the manipulation.
