description Introduction: A high percentage of alterations of the rib cage are due to factors such as morphological conformation, aging changes and postural habits, which promote negative factors such as joint stiffness, structural deformities and loss of flexibility, affecting to a great extent, the spine and respiratory system. Likewise, there are anatomical variations that can enhance and accelerate its appearance, which is why its knowledge must be broadly addressed. Objective: To understand the anatomical functional characteristics of the thorax and spine joints. Methods: A bibliographic review of 33 articles was carried out in databases such as PubMed and Scopus; using standard terms and search equations. In addition, 5 guide books were consulted, which met the defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The thorax joints show little anatomical and functional variations mentioned that contribute to confusion in the concepts and descriptions of joint classifications, mobility arches and finally trigger pathologies in other systems due to the inadequate functioning of the osteoarthri muscular structures at the axial level, in many cases with surgical requirements for their correction. Conclusion: It is essential to understand that the anatomy of the thorax acquires clinical importance not only in physiotherapy and rehabilitation of patients with respiratory diseases, but also for the prevention of predisposing factors for musculoskeletal disorders.

No. 4 (2022): Revista Salutem Scientia Spiritus; 39-45Salutem Scientia Spiritus; Vol. 8 Núm. 4 (2022): Revista Salutem Scientia Spiritus; 39-452463-1426TóraxPared toráxicaArticulacionesAnatomíaHistologíaArticulaciones esternocostalesVariaciónTerapia respiratoriaCostillasEsternónThoraxThoracic wallJointsAnatomyHistologySternocostal jointsVariationRespiratory therapyRibsSternumAnatomofunctional review of the articulations of the vertebral column and the thoracic wall.
