An extensive search of the literature was carried out in different databases to reveal aspects of chronic kidney disease, its conventional diagnosis and new diagnostic methods. Measuring serum creatinine is not sufficient to assess kidney function, while cystatin C, by freely filtering through the kidney and not binding to plasma proteins, makes this the most accurate measure to estimate kidney function. There is still no precise marker to correctly assess the glomerular filtration rate, however, cystatin C is of great diagnostic utility for kidney failure, since its elevated levels identify a greater risk for kidney disease.La enfermedad renal crónica es una enfermedad con altos niveles de morbimortalidad; actualmente se diagnostica con la creatinina sérica y estimando la TFG, siendo las ecuaciones CKD-EPI y MDRD las más usadas. Se realizó́ una búsqueda extensa de la literatura en distintas bases de datos para dar a conocer aspectos sobre la enfermedad renal crónica, su diagnóstico convencional y nuevos métodos diagnósticos. El medir la creatinina en suero no es suficiente para evaluar la función renal, mientras que la cistatina C al filtrarse libremente por el riñón y al no unirse a proteínas plasmáticas hace de esta la medida más exacta para estimar la función renal.
