SOCIAL REPRESENTATIONS of VIOLENCE and CONFLICT in PEOPLE of COMUNA UNO in SANTIAGO DE CALI

This research aims to find out the social representations thatpeople from “Comuna 1” of Cali had about the phenomenon ofviolence and conflict.A descriptive exploratory research was carried out, identifyingsocila representations about violence which included differentvariables based on experiences of everyday life. The sampleconsisted of five groups of adolescents ( three of women andtwo of men), two groups of senior citizens abnd one groupwhich was composed of people who work in the localcommunity. The methodology of Focus Groups was applied tothe five adolescent groups and to the two senior citizensgroups. The interview for the community group wascondiucted individually but the results were analyzed on acollective basis.The conclusion stated that people from this communeperceived their community as “violent” arguing that “violencehas become part of aour daily life”, “social cleansing groupskill anyone considered as a socially dangerous agent”, “manyof criminal activities are connected with drug dealing”,“public violence is manifested visually and verbally in publicplaces”. In summary, the ordinary people of the commune arethe victims of different kinds of violence at any time byanyone.
