Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) is a disease of viral origin known clinically for nose reddening, tearing of calves, vesicular vaginitis, coital exanthema; it is a highly contagious disease that manifests clinically in different ways depending on the serotype involved and the infected tissue. IBR is caused by bovine Herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV – 1). This virus is a member of the genus Varicellovirus in the subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae, which belongs to the Herpesviridae family. Being a herpesvirus has the ability to generate latency in the infected animal, making it a carrier for life; making it susceptible to subsequent bacterial and viral infections such as occurs in the bovine respiratory complex or "boarding fever". It is a disease that has spread worldwide, with a report in the country since 1972. In Colombia, several BoHV-1 seroprevalence studies have been carried out, ranging from 20 to 90%, suggesting an endemic presentation of the disease. Its importance lies in the reproductive problems it causes, including the repetition of services, orchitis, epididymitis, vaginitis, fetal infection, abortion, postpartum metritis, anestrus and some cases of mastitis that has been associated with the presence of the virus. It is cataloged as one of the conditions that generates the most economic losses in the world cattle ranch. Several countries in Europe have chosen the path of eradication, but very few have succeeded. The lack of efficient diagnostic techniques and shortcomings in the quality and use of vaccines have been one of the main obstacles to overcome, in addition to the high economic costs involved in an eradication program. Our country does not have clear control measures aimed at reducing high seroprevalence; being one of the main tasks to achieve in order to mitigate the negative impact on Colombian livestock. These strategies must be comprehensively addressed by involving all parties involved in the process.Resumen. -- Abstract. -- Introducción. -- Justificación. -- Objetivos. -- Objetivo general. -- Objetivos específicos. -- Marco Teórico. -- Historia de la rinotraqueitis infecciosa bovina (IBR). -- Etiología. -- Clasificación. -- Epidemiologia. -- Latencia viral.
