The study describes the early signs of Alzheimer's type dementia and its related factors on the elders of Buga, using a descriptive cross-sectional study, with evaluation in the institution and domiciliary in different socioeconomic strata, through the Mini Cognitive Exam abbreviated. Statistical analysis was performed through the SPSS program, with averages and standard deviations using p of <0.05 as statistically significant, finding 129 adults over 60 years of age with similar percentages among men (51.9%) and women (48.1%), which 64.3% presented alteration, most of them being deterioration cognitive minor (46.5%), with significant associations of decrease in the memory of evocation, attention and calculation, language and construction and temporary - spatial orientation, the lack of a main caregiver, not developing a productive activity, being female, having more than 75 years and a low educational level. The prevalence of deterioration cognitive according to the classification of the MEC in this population with the related factors and the early detection signals mentioned, are within the reported in comparison with other studies, and although its classification is in deterioration cognitive minor and this does not represent a well known Problem for the development of daily life, it increases the risk of suffering from Alzheimer's type dementia if preventive mental health styles that promote mental stimulation are not developed.La demencia tipo Alzheimer es una enfermedad irreversible del cerebro, se caracteriza por el daño lento y progresivo de la memoria y las aptitudes del pensamiento, es la causa principal de demencia en personas mayores de 60 años, se ha convertido en un problema social grave por sus altos costos.1 Este estudio describe las señales tempranas y los factores relacionados de demencia tipo Alzheimer en adultos mayores de Buga, por medio de un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal, con evaluación en la institución y domiciliaria en distintos estratos socioeconómicos, mediante el Mini Examen Cognoscitivo abreviado. Se realizó el análisis estadístico por medio del programa SPSS, con promedios y desviaciones estándar empleando p de <0.05 como estadísticamente significativa, encontrando 129 adultos mayores de 60 años con porcentajes similares entre hombres (51.9%) y mujeres (48.1%), de los cuales el 64.3% presentaron alteración, siendo su mayoría Deterioro Cognitivo Leve (46.5%), con asociaciones significativas para disminución en la memoria de evocación, atención, cálculo, lenguaje, construcción y orientación temporo – espacial, la falta de un cuidador principal, no desarrollar una actividad productiva, ser del sexo femenino, tener más de 75 años y un nivel educativo bajo. La prevalencia de Deterioro Cognitivo está dentro de lo informado en comparación con otros estudios, aunque su clasificación se encuentra en Deterioro Cognitivo Leve, este no representa un problema notorio para el desarrollo de la vida diaria, sí aumenta el riesgo de padecer demencia tipo alzhéimer si no se desarrollan estilos de vida preventivos que promuevan la estimulación mental.1.
