This study was carried out to improve the English proficiency of students in fifth grade Julia Becerra educational institution located in the city of Tulua. Thus, the main objective of this study was to identify how it affects vocabulary learning strategy by Keyword Method, in the students' oral production, focused on learning basic vocabulary. Also this study investigated the use and effectiveness of a mnemonic procedure, called the keyword method to learn vocabulary of a foreign language. The method divides the vocabulary study in two stages. The first step is the association of the foreign word spoken with a Spanish word that sounds like a part of the foreign word, the second stage requires the subject to form a mental image or picture of the word "interaction" with the Spanish translation.Aplicar la estrategia Keyword Method para mejorar el aprendizaje del vocabulario básico en inglés en los estudiantes de quinto grado, es un estudio basado en el trabajo de Richard C, Akitson “An Application of the Mnemonic Keyword Method to the Acquisition of a Russian Vocabulary”. Este estudio fue llevado a cabo para mejorar el nivel de inglés de los estudiantes de quinto grado de la institución educativa Julia Becerra, ubicado en la ciudad de Tuluá. Es así como el objetivo principal de este estudio fue identificar cómo influye el aprendizaje de vocabulario por medio de la estrategia Keyword Method, en la producción oral de los estudiantes, enfocado hacia el aprendizaje del vocabulario básico. Así mismo este estudio indago sobre el uso y la eficacia de un procedimiento mnemotécnico, llamado el método de palabras clave, para aprender vocabulario de un idioma extranjero. El método divide el estudio de vocabulario en dos etapas.
