Los constituyentes químicos de las albahacas no mostraron actividad antimicrobial frente a Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus y Candida albicans, pero el potencial antioxidante revelado es garantía del uso dado a estos vegetales en la medicina folclórica como antidiabéticos, el cual podría derivar de sus constituyentes fenólicos. Este es el primer estudio, hasta ahora reportado, relacionado con la actividad antioxidante y antimicrobial de residuos de alguna albahaca.ABSTRACT After extracting the essential oil of four basils grown in Ibagué, the residual vegetal material was evaluated to determine the antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of the methanolic abstracts obtained from the aerial part of the plants. The basil chemical components did not show antimicrobial activity in front of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, but the revealed antioxidant activity potential is guarantee of uses given to this vegetable in folk medicine, such as anti-diabetics, which could derive from its phenolic constituents.
