En la economía colombiana la explotación de carbón se consolida como un factor determinante, en el desarrollo acelerado de los últimos años, ampliando las zonas de explotación en diferentes lugares del país, lo que genera que cada vez más, diversos ecosistemas resulten intervenidos por esta actividad. La extracción de carbón es una actividad con un alto grado de impactos ambientales asociados, haciendo necesario realizar un mayor esfuerzo para contrarrestar estos inconvenientes y velar por la protección de los recursos naturales; por tal razón se debe impulsar a mejorar las prácticas ambientales sin escatimar esfuerzos en pro de un desarrollo sostenible. Por medio de una investigación descriptiva, y de instrumentos de información se determinó la problemática ambiental asociada a la extracción de carbón subterráneo en Colombia, logrando con información secundaria describir la situación actual de la actividad económica y a su vez proponer alternativas para mitigar o compensar la afectación ambiental generada. Entre los hallazgos se encontró que la extracción de carbón está determinada por cuatro etapas básicas (exploración, construcción y montaje, operación y cierre y abandono) en las que interfiere el cuidado ambiental por la afectación directa a los componentes bióticos, abióticos y sociales, de manera que se debe crear una armonía entre las acciones orientadas a mejorar la gestión y el desempeño minero-ambiental. |

The extraction of coal is an activity with a high degree of associated environmental impacts, making it necessary to make a greater effort to counteract these inconveniences and ensure the protection of natural resources; For this reason, environmental practices should be encouraged without sparing any effort towards sustainable development. Through a descriptive investigation, and of information instruments, the environmental problem associated with the extraction of underground coal in Colombia was determined, obtaining with secondary information to describe the current situation of the economic activity and in turn propose alternatives to mitigate or compensate the affectation generated environmental.
