Tiene 5 regiones y una gran variedad de pisos térmicos que le permite producir recursos minerales como carbón, oro y plata, que tienen un alto valor en el mercado internacional, tiene zonas como el Urabá Antioqueño que produce una gran cantidad de recursos. Además, tiene regiones como la Amazonia y la Pacifica que son grandes fuentes de recursos y que tienen un valor geopolítica relevante, la Amazonia como fábrica de oxigeno del mundo y la región Pacifica, como puerta de Colombia a Asia y Oceanía toma gran importancia en la actualidad, aunque son zonas que no cuentan con vías de primarias ni segundarias, lo que dificulta el transporte de los recursos hasta los puertos. En el caso del Pacifico solo hay uno que está ubicado en Buenaventura.
