Actualmente tanto las aguas superficiales como subterráneas están siendo contaminadas como producto de las actividades humanas, sufriendo en las diferentes regiones del mundo eutrofización. Una alternativa para el tratamiento de estas aguas residuales es la ficorremediación, es decir la remoción de nutrientes y metales pesados a manera de tratamiento secundario con el uso de algas.
