description Kaolinite, as a clay material, exhibits variability of its properties in presence of temperature changes. This paper presents the results of an experimental study of thermal effects on the mechanical behaviour of kaolinite, as well, as the heat generation scenario. In the Homogeneous Heat Generation scenario (HHG), samples were subjected to a temperature treatment in a furnace at different temperatures, and Atterberg limits and unconfined compression tests were performed afterwards. In the Punctual Heat Generation scenario (PHG), an electric resistance heating element was used to heat the samples at different time lapses. Temperature profile inside the samples were gathered, and a CPT was performed. In the HHG scenario, Atterberg limits presented no change with temperature, but the undrained shar strength increased (Cu). In the PHG scenario, temperature and Cu presented a remarkably decrease with distance from the heating source. However, the increase of the undrained shear strength showed a dependence on the heat treatment time. The release of non-structural water with high temperatures can explain the increase in the mechanical behaviour of kaolinite

Este articulo presenta los resultados experimentales del estudio de los efectos térmicos sobre el comportamiento mecánico del caolín, teniendo en cuenta el escenario de generación de calor. En el escenario de Generación Homogénea de Calor (Homogenous Heat Generation, HHG) las muestras fueron sometidas a un tratamiento térmico en un horno de alta temperatura, y se determinaron los Límites de Atterberg junto con ensayos de compresión inconfinada. En el escenario de Generación Puntual de Calor (Punctual Heat Generatio, PHG) se utilizó una resistencia eléctrica embebida en las muestras, y se sometieron a dicho tratamiento térmico durante diferentes periodos de tiempo. Se determinaron los perfiles de temperatura dentro de las muestras y se realizaron ensayos CPT. En el escenario HHG, los límites de Atterberg no presentaron cambios frente a la temperatura, mientras que la resistencia no-drenada (Cu) aumentó. En el escenario PHG, la temperatura y la resistencia no-drenada presentaron una disminución importante a medida que se alejaba el punto de medición de la resistencia eléctrica. Sin embargo, el aumento de la resistencia no-drenada presentó una dependencia con el tiempo de tratamiento térmico.
