This question is relevant, since understanding the consequences of historical ethnic violence on contemporary social capital can provide useful inputs to design effective State-building policies. I exploit Mfecane, a period of ethnic upheaval in South African history, as a setting to examine the causal effects of historical ethnic conflict on contemporary levels of social capital. For this end, I use a combination of a historical approximation of the Mfecane warzone with geocoded data from the Afrobarometer project (2000-2016). Using an instrumental variables strategy, I find that historical ethnic conflict decreases contemporary trust in people among individuals living within the borders of Mfecane, while increasing trust in relatives and neighbors. Increases in in-group trust appear to be driven by the long run persistence of parochial altruism. Conversely, lower levels of betweengroup trust can be explained by the lack of economic incentives to cooperate with strangers in former warzones. These results are suggestive of a degree of substitutability between in-group and between-group social capital, at the community level.Este artículo estudia la siguiente pregunta de investigación: ¿Cuáles son los efectos de los conflictos étnicos históricos sobre los niveles contemporáneos de capital social? Esta pregunta es relevante, puesto que comprender el efecto de la violencia étnica histórica en el capital social contemporáneo puede proporcionar insumos útiles para el diseño de políticas públicas de construcción del Estado. Exploro el Mfecane, un período de conflicto étnico en la historia sudafricana, como un escenario para estimar el efecto causal de los conflictos étnicos históricos en los niveles contemporáneos de capital social. Para ello, combino una aproximación histórica de la zona de guerra del Mfecane con datos georreferenciados del Afrobarómetro (2000-2016). Utilizando una estrategia de identificación de variables instrumentales, hallo que la exposición histórica a violencia étnica disminuye los niveles de confianza contemporáneos en otras personas entre los individuos que hoy viven dentro de las fronteras del Mfecane, al tiempo que aumentan los niveles de confianza en parientes y vecinos. Asimismo, hallo evidencia que sugiere que los aumentos en el capital social ¿intragrupo¿ se explican por la persistencia de prácticas de altruismo parroquial, en el largo plazo.
