description |
A deep transformation of the nature of scientific organizations, the borders between public and private knowledge, and the rules governing scientific communities has been taking place in the last three decades. Knowledge networks have populated scientific environments. These changes have not been homogeneous around the world. Only a minority of inhabitants of this planet have access to the new technological environments. The paper analyses recent trends in the exchange of knowledge worldwide, and show the disparity between the potential of contributions to human knowledge from scientists living in developing nations, and their access to information and knowledge resources. International scientific collaboration is critical for the development and valorization of scientific knowledge, but transaction costs related to scientific institutions and national differences may hinder it. Three global scenarios for the future of research in developing countries are inferred. They are labelled science without frontiers, a network of national knowledge systems, and divergence. Criteria are advanced to evaluate the predictions implicit in these prospective scenarios. |

Three global scenarios for the future of research in developing countries are inferred. They are labelled science without frontiers, a network of national knowledge systems, and divergence. Criteria are advanced to evaluate the predictions implicit in these prospective scenarios. Knowledge Societies, Social Networks and Science in Developing Countries. 2.
