Description
Summary:The use of containers instead of virtual machines may bring significant benefits to scientific applications. Containers not only tend to consume less computational resources but also imply faster deployment times and a smaller memory footprint which leads to storage savings and network usage optimization when transferring images. This project implements a proof of concept of an IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) cloud service model in which containers are used instead of virtual machines. According to our initial evaluation, the resulting platform is capable of deploying mid-sized virtual clusters in only a fraction of the time taken by similar platforms based on Virtual Machines, offering the same or better instance performance and managing resources in a more efficient manner that leads to an increased number of guest instances per host machine.
