Description
Summary:Research on the effects of automation and the labor demand composition has focused on mechanisms in the absence of administrative frictions. This paper analyzes the effect of the minimum wage on firm's technology use decisions. For this, we propose a statistic model in which there are three production factors: skilled labor, unskilled labor and capital. Automation can displace unskilled work or skilled work. The proposed model suggests that an exogenous increase in the minimum wage creates incentives for goods produced with unskilled labor to be produced with automation technologies or with technologies that are skilled labor intensive. Finally, it argues that the introduction of a minimum wage generates unemployment for unskilled workers and an excess demand for skilled workers in the context in which the labor supply (skilled and unskilled) is inelastic.
