Description
Summary:This article approaches two cases of urban communities whom are neighbors of open-pit construction materials mining projects in the municipality of Soacha. The literature on environmental problems in marginalized and deprived spaces has shown that there are multiple factors that hinder mobilization in these contexts, but this investigation focuses precisely on the inverse question: How does mobilization arise against mining in urban communities that are neighbors of these projects? For that reason, I compare a case in which was an environmental mobilization with one in which mobilization has not occurred. These cases are similar because they are part of the urban sector of Soacha (communes 4, 5 and 6) that is a neighbor of the mining district, they have a similar socioeconomic composition and origin, and in both cases a similar temporality has been analyzed using the qualitative comparative analysis, using information obtained from documents and interviews.
