Description
Summary:The puna ecoregion, found in the southern and central Andes, encompasses a large variety of ecosystems and vegetation species. Although some bioregionalization studies have been done for the puna, most of them have been conducted on a national or departmental scale. This study aimed to conduct a large-scale phytogeographical regionalization of the puna. Specifically, (1) a phytosociological database of the puna was created, (2) clustering analysis were conducted in order to identify major phytogeographical units and (3) diagnostic species analyses were done to determine main characteristics of each unit. The study area included the region of the Andean mountain range between southwestern Peru and northwestern Argentina. The phytosociological database on which the analyses were based on consisted of 656 plots from Chile, Peru and Argentina.
