Summary: | The mass distribution of messages on social networks, commonly referred to as viralisation, has become an extremely useful tool when it comes to spreading political discourse in an efficient and low-cost way. Recent research on the psychological mechanisms that can cause this phenomenon has been carried out mainly through methodologies of analysis of political message databases on twitter in the political context of the United States. These have led to the conclusion that the use of emotional language significantly increases the likelihood of a political message being shared, which has been termed emotional contagion (Brady et al., 2017;2018). However, the research design and methodology used in these investigations do not allow for a definitive conclusion of the causal relationship between the use of emotional language and the dissemination of messages (Burton et al., 2017).
