During the last decades, similarities in the viral cycle and the structure of some of their proteins with those of the tailed phages have brought speculation regarding the existence of an evolutionary relationship between the two clades. To evaluate such hypothesis, we used over 700 Herpesvirales and 2000 Caudovirales genomes downloaded from the NCBI genome and nucleotide databases, which were first de-replicated both at the nucleotide and amino acid level. Following this, they were screened for the presence or absence of clusters of orthologous viral proteins, and a dendrogram was constructed based on their compositional similarities. The results obtained strongly suggest that the Herpesvirales have an evolutionary relationship with the Caudovirales, and allow putting forth hypotheses concerning the specific details of such relationship...El orden Herpesvirales está compuesto de una gran variedad de patógenos humanos, incluyendo el Virus Varicela-Zóster, el Citomegalovirus Humano y el Virus de Epstein-Barr. A lo largo de las últimas décadas, similitudes en el ciclo viral y la estructura de algunas de sus proteínas con aquellas de los Caudovirales han generado especulación acerca de la existencia de una relación evolutiva entre estos dos órdenes. Para evaluar dicha hipótesis, se emplearon más de 700 genomas de Herpesvirales y 2000 de Caudovirales obtenidos de las bases de datos genome y nucleotide de NCBI, que primeramente fueron de-replicados con base en su similitud a nivel de ácidos nucleicos y aminoácidos. Seguidamente, se determinó la presencia o ausencia en los mismos de secuencias pertenecientes a clústeres de proteínas ortólogas, construyúndose luego un dendrograma con base en los últimos.
