Ciudad del Cabo se posiciona como el caso insignia de las crisis hídricas, cuando en 2018, la ciudad estuvo muy cerca de que los grifos de la ciudad cerrarán en el denominado "Día Cero". Lo vivido en Ciudad del Cabo no fue producto solo de una sequía causada por bajas precipitaciones, sino que este fue un factor que agravó la mala administración del agua disponible producto de una crisis política heredada de los tiempos del Apartheid y exacerbada por la corrupción y divisiones polarizantes de los principales partidos de Sudáfrica. A esto se le suma la dependencia del sistema hídrico de las aguas lluvias resultado de décadas de ignorar las advertencias científicas y por esta razón se plantea la necesidad de una reestructuración política que permita de una veeduría ciudadana fuerte.
