Visual organization, morphological characteristics and optical properties of the stemmata in the larvae of the dobsonfly corydalus armatus Hagen, 1861 (Megaloptera: Corydalidae)

The stemmata are the photosensitive organs of several groups of holometabolous immature insects. They are single chamber eyes equipped with a concave retina and a single lens. The arrangement on the head is highly diverse, in some groups with image resolving capability; and in other cases, only with...

Description
Summary:The stemmata are the photosensitive organs of several groups of holometabolous immature insects. They are single chamber eyes equipped with a concave retina and a single lens. The arrangement on the head is highly diverse, in some groups with image resolving capability; and in other cases, only with differences in the spectral sensibility among different stemmata... That is the case with the aquatic and predatory larvae of Corydalus (Megaloptera: Corydalidae) showing six well developed stemmata on each side of the head and arranged as a pentagon with a stemma in the center... To address these objectives we used geometric and lineal morphometric methods applied to different larval stages. Finally, to evaluate the image resolving capacity of the stemmata we carried out semi-thin sections and measured the focal lengths of the corneal lenses of each stemma in mature larvae..." -- Tomado del Formato de Documento de Grado.
