Description
Summary:There is a wide debate around the hypothesis of inverse relationship between the size of the agricultural farm and its productivity in developing countries. Studies carried out at the international level have found statistical evidence to accept or reject the hypothesis. In Colombia, due to the absence of microdata at the national level, the studies focus on the analysis of the relationship in specific crops or regions and their results are not conclusive for the entire country. This work determines the relationship between the size of the productive unit and its productivity using the National Agricultural Census and analyzing the intensity of labor and machinery as explanatory mechanisms. The methodology used calculates the multiproduct production function, which captures the effect of the partial productivity of the land on the yield per hectare of the productive unit. This work contributes to the literature by incorporating: objective land quality measurements for the calculation of the relationship and environmental, commercial and social information derived from the georeferenced location of the farm. The main result is that the relationship between the size of the farm and its productivity depends on the type of crop and participation in family agriculture.
