El espacio de juego: entre la circunstancia y la narrativa ficticia

Play is a human activity which takes place in its own space, the playing space, where players separate themselves from their ordinary lives and enter a fictional reality. However, separation and fiction, both characteristics commonly associated with play, are not always detached from their surroundings. Players rely on what surrounds them in order to play. This text addresses the separation associated with play by focusing on the conceptual understanding of the play space. As such, this paper aims at revealing that, in the production of the play space, players face a creative act. By doing so, players combine fictional narrative necessities with compositional restraints from their surroundings in order to properly set their performance. Simultaneously, by engaging in this creative act, players assign new meanings and functions to the elements and objects found in their environs. Once their performance is over, individuals are able to establish new ways to comprehend and to relate to and use their surroundings.
