In the first chapter I use the allocation of inmates to old and new Colombian prisons to examine the effects of poor prison conditions on recidivism. In the second chapter (with Christopher Blattman, Donald Green and Daniel Ortega) we evaluate the effects of hot spots policing and municipal services on crime, violence and state legitimacy. In the third chapter (with Santiago Gómez and Daniel Mejía) we benefit from a quasi-experimental setting in Medellín, Colombia to evaluate the deterrent effects of public surveillance cameras on criminal behavior.Las políticas exitosas para la prevención del crimen son un elemento central para economías en transición hacia el desarrollo. Los tres capítulos de este trabajo estudian los efectos de políticas y características institucionales sobre la violencia, el comportamiento criminal y la legitimidad del Estado. En el primer capítulo evalúo los efectos de las condiciones de reclusión sobre la reincidencia de ex-convictos. En el segundo capítulo (con Christopher Blattman, Donald Green y Daniel Ortega) evalúo los efectos de las tácticas de policía en puntos calientes y la intensificación de servicios distritales sobre la violencia y la legitimidad del Estado.
