This remains the case after controlling for literacy, other higher order human capital, such as lawyers, as well as demand side elements that might be confounded with engineering. The analysis then finds that agglomeration, certain geographical fundamentals, and extractive institutions such as slavery affect innovative capacity. However, a large effect associated with being a Spanish colony remains suggesting important inherited factors.Usando reciente información nacional y subnacional, junto con estudios de casos históricos, este artículo argumenta que las diferencias en la capacidad de innovación, medida como la densidad de ingenieros a comienzos de la Segunda Revolución Industrial, son importantes para explicar las diferencias de ingresos en la actualidad y, en particular, el pobre desempeño de América Latina con relación a América del Norte. Este sigue siendo el caso una vez se controla por alfabetización y otras medidas dc capital humano, como abogados, así como elementos de la demanda que podrían confundirse con ingeniería.
