Description
Summary:"The understanding of the institutional consequences of armed conflicts is limited. This work contributes to this branch of the literature by investigating the relationship between the occurrence of political violence (massacres, selective assassinations, etc.) and the citizenrys trust in State institutions ? the judiciary, in particular. Following an instrumental variable approach and using a panel that is representative of the urban zones of Colombia, estimates show that an additional recent political violence event in a municipality where a community is located lowers the probability of the use of justice to solve problems by 4.1 percentage points. Furthermore, the evidence points towards significantly stronger effects when those actions are executed by individuals that represent the State and when they take place in vulnerable locations. Results, therefore, suggest that civil wars have major impacts over citizens trust in State institutions" -- Tomado del Formato de Documento de Grado.
