Se ahonda en la caracterización arqueológica de estos pobladores que habitaron Momil, buscando indicadores de diferenciación funcional y social, que se asocien a la complejidad social, para evidenciar qué tipo de sociedad está presente. El estudio emplea una escala grande que no había sido utilizada en el área mediante un muestreo regional sistemático, aleatorio y estratificado con las unidades de paisaje identificadas. Desde una perspectiva de las sociedades en entornos de tierras bajas, se evidenció que el paisaje es una variable importante que influye en los patrones de asentamiento. Además, se pudo evidenciar que los grupos se relacionan culturalmente con las sociedades hidráulicas del Bajo San Jorge, vinculados a amplias modificaciones al paisaje con canales y camellones, que aún son investigadas. No obstante, la secuencia cronológica estipulada para estas sociedades del Bajo San Jorge no parece corresponder con la evidencia hallada, en tanto en Momil los tipos cerámicos que identifican esas tradiciones aparecen coexistiendo en varios contextos y a veces en sentidos estratigráficos que serían inversos a la perspectiva temporal asociada con esas tradiciones. Se hicieron sondeos con barreno hasta máximo 4 metros de profundidad que no mostraron una secuencia a partir de cómo se deposita la evidencia investigada, lo que se confirmó con una excavación poco profunda que muestra la misma tendencia. Por otro lado, se evidenció recurrentemente el complejo Tierra Alta, asociado a grupos del golfo de Urabá, del cual no hay mucha evidencia en el bajo San Jorge, y para este sí se notó un patrón en cómo se deposita, que sugiere que es más tardía. También se notó que, en ciertas zonas, por lo general inundables, se presenta sedimentación aluvial alta que dio la oportunidad de emplear herramientas como los barrenos para lidiar con ella.
