Description
Summary:In many neurodegenerative diseases, such as Dementia and Alzheimer's, the accumulation of amyloid plaques and tau proteins has shown to be correlated with the neurodegeneration of neurons. Based on some recent studies, in which was demonstrated a stimulation at 40 Hz might enhance gamma oscillations, activating a series of endogenous mechanism to "clean" the brain and get rid of those proteins related with neurodegenerative diseases, it was designed a noninvasive stimulation device, named NIRCo-Stimulator, it was developed with the goal of being efficient enough to modulate a cerebral activity in the Gamma band. This thesis document describes the theoretical foundations and electrical features to build the device with the proficiency to modulate cerebral rhythms in the gamma band at 40 Hz. EEG digital signal analysis implemented tools to check if there was evidence to demonstrate this device is able to stimulate cerebral rhythms. Results showed NIRCo-Stimulator seems to achieve modulating this brain activity. An optional but not mandatory requirement in this thesis was to check whether, could brain stimulation due to pulses in the NIR spectrum, enhance cognitive abilities in healthy subjects?. Though in this research, it was implemented a cognitive experiment, this is still fairly away to get an answer.
