Description
Summary:High crime rates can affect electoral behavior. In this article, I analyze the effect of urban crime on electoral participation, vote concentration, and candidate vote share in mayoral elections held in Bogota, Colombia in 2015, in which security was one of the main issues of concern. In the analysis, I consider the electoral results, an urban crime index, and the number of bars near polling stations as a crime source of exogenous variation. The results show that urban crime correlates negatively and significantly with electoral participation and vote concentration. As for candidate vote share, there is no apparent effect of crime on support for the incumbent party. However, I find evidence that in areas with high crime rates, candidates who propose increasing police presence to address criminality receive higher vote shares.
