Towards understanding the relation between transmilenio and walking for transportation

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems are a growing trend around the globe. There is a positive association between using TM and walking more than 150 minutes per week, there is also a positive association between access to TM and walking more than 150 minutes per week, also subjects living in neighborhoo...

description Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems are a growing trend around the globe. There is a positive association between using TM and walking more than 150 minutes per week, there is also a positive association between access to TM and walking more than 150 minutes per week, also subjects living in neighborhoods in which TM was built increased more the number of minutes walking for transport and the likelihood of walking for transport more than 150 minutes. using an agent based model (ABM) I show that the relation between use and access of TM and walking for transport could be explained through agents that decide the mode of transportation based on resources and time. According to the model TM increases the number of minutes walking for transport only in environments with a high density of bus stations. TM has a positive relation with walking for transport in Bogotá due to Bogotá?s high bus density, and TM?s price and speed. Understanding the system in terms of actual decision making processes driven by actors and their environment may prove helpful in designing policies to increase walking and PA without harming people?s quality of life
