One of the most remarkable events in Earth history affecting the distribution of life was the emergence of the Isthmus of Panama, which connected North and South America and allowed substantial trans-continental movement of organisms in an event known as the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI). Among the numerous studies about the GABI, very few have investigated organismal traits which may have allowed or prevented some species to participate in the exchange. Because the colonization process implies both the ability to reach new regions and to establish populations under potentially different environmental conditions, dispersal ability and niche breadth may affect colonization success.
