In this study, we intend to use the mechanisms that authors like Fèare, Chung and Chambers (1996) have designed and implemented in order to make visible the phenomenon of pollution within the economic discipline. During the development of this text, and with the help of directional distance functions, the opportunity cost (shadow price) of greenhouse emissions, specifically emissions of CH4 (methane) for the livestock sector (bovine cattle) in Colombia is estimated in quantifiable units of GHG. The results show that there is indeed a cost of contamination associated with the livestock sector, which varies for each department given its level of efficiency but which tends to remain stable over the years.El compromiso medio ambiental que posee cada país con el resto del mundo implica que, a partir de las distintas disciplinas del conocimiento se desarrollen herramientas que permitan hacerle frente al fenómeno del cambio climático. En este estudio se pretende utilizar los mecanismos que autores como Fèare, Chung y Chambers (1996) han diseñado e implementado con el fin de hacer visible y tangible el fenómeno de la contaminación dentro de la disciplina económica. Por medio del uso de funciones direccionales a distancia, se busca durante el desarrollo de este texto calcular el costo de oportunidad (precio sombra) en unidades cuantificables de las emisiones de GEI (gases de efecto invernadero), en específico del CH4 (metano) para el sector pecuario (ganado Bovino) en Colombia.
