Description
Summary:Injuries derived from thermal trauma (burns) are a worldwide public health problem. In Colombia there are several prevention strategies, but so far, the influence of these on child caregivers has not been evaluated. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of the prevention materials of the Colombia sin Quemados strategy on the risk perception of burns of children at home in caregivers in Bogotá. Methods: Qualitative study. We worked with 8 caregivers in two different moments, a first moment before exposure to prevention materials and a second moment after exposure. Information was collected through semi-structured interviews after characterizing the prevention material of the strategy. The interviews were transcribed and then analyzed by categories. Results: the study shows how, after exposure to the burn prevention materials, the caregivers' previous positive perceptions changed or were strengthened. It can also be seen how the materials manage to influence the caregivers' perceptions, as well as generate examples that are easily identifiable. Caregivers fail to develop the concept of risk identification for burn prevention. Implications: It is necessary to open spaces and initiate interventions in prevention through education, as well as to evaluate the strategies put in place. Behavioral changes in the home plus risk awareness through education is the best way to address the burns issue. Given the lack of formal education strategies and their evaluation in Colombia, it is necessary to reinforce this area in order to promote behavioral changes in the population. This concept is supported by the literature that shows how active educational interventions have effects at the level of decreasing the incidence of cases.
