Esta práctica se ha convertido en un grande dilema bioético actual, al determinar si debe primar la autonomía y tradición de las comunidades indígenas o la salud y los derechos de las niñas sometidas al procedimiento. Se cree que esta práctica nació en Egipto hace unos 4000 años debido a que se han encontrado algunas momias con dicho procedimiento, aunque no se sabe con certeza si éste fue su origen, posteriormente se fue extendiendo a diversas comunidades indígenas. Este procedimiento se puede practicar desde el nacimiento hasta antes del matrimonio o hasta cuando la mujer tenga su primer hijo, pero a la mayoría de niñas se les realiza antes de la pubertad. El cual, es realizado principalmente por mujeres; parteras y abuelas de estas comunidades que además no tienen el suficiente conocimiento médico para la realización de procedimientos, que realizan sin condiciones de asepsia y antisepsia, utilizando cuchillos rústicos, navajas o cuchillas de afeitar. |
