Nuestro objetivo es analizar la relación entre la cirugía bariátrica y la disminución de síntomas depresivos en pacientes con obesidad, considerando las limitaciones y variables que afectan el éxito de este procedimiento en términos de salud mental. Se utilizó una revisión sistemática de estudios para evaluar los efectos de la cirugía bariátrica en la calidad de vida y los síntomas depresivos en esta población. Las variables analizadas incluyen tipo de cirugía, factores psicológicos previos y cambios postquirúrgicos en la salud mental. Los métodos comprenden la revisión de literatura existente sobre la prevalencia de depresión en pacientes con obesidad y los efectos a mediano y largo plazo de la cirugía bariátrica en esta condición. Las técnicas estadísticas se centraron en el análisis de la distribución pre y postquirúrgica de síntomas depresivos, evaluando la frecuencia y reducción de estos síntomas tras la cirugía. Los resultados indican que la cirugía bariátrica puede mejorar la calidad de vida y reducir síntomas de depresión en algunos pacientes, aunque no en todos. En pacientes con altos niveles de insatisfacción corporal, así como alteraciones perceptuales de la calidad de vida y síntomas depresivos severos, la cirugía, junto con terapia psicológica, mostró mejoras significativas en autoestima y relaciones sociales. Sin embargo, la evidencia no es concluyente y se necesitan estudios adicionales que definan los criterios de inclusión de manera uniforme para determinar el impacto preciso de la cirugía bariátrica en la salud mental de esta población. En conclusión, la cirugía bariátrica presenta beneficios potenciales para el tratamiento de la depresión asociada a obesidad, con un abordaje integral para mejorar y sostener estos resultados a largo plazo. |

A systematic review of studies was used to evaluate the effects of bariatric surgery on quality of life and depressive symptoms in this population. Variables analyzed included type of surgery, previous psychological factors, and post-surgical changes in mental health. Methods comprised the review of existing literature on the prevalence of depression in patients with obesity and the medium and long-term effects of bariatric surgery on this condition. Statistical techniques focused on the analysis of the pre- and post-surgical distribution of depressive symptoms, evaluating the frequency and reduction of these symptoms after surgery. The results indicate that bariatric surgery can improve quality of life and reduce depressive symptoms in some, but not all, patients. In patients with high levels of body dissatisfaction, as well as perceptual alterations in quality of life and severe depressive symptoms, surgery, together with psychological therapy, showed significant improvements in self-esteem and social relationships. However, the evidence is inconclusive and further studies that uniformly define the inclusion criteria are needed to determine the precise impact of bariatric surgery on the mental health of this population.
