Por ello, esta investigación se centrará en describir la perspectiva de los especialistas en neurología general y epilepsia de la región sobre estos temas. Objetivo: Nuestro objetivo es realizar una encuesta a especialistas en neurología general y epilepsia de ALC, con el propósito de describir y analizar las barreras percibidas por neurólogos y epileptólogos, en relación con el acceso a servicios de salud para la epilepsia en la región. Esta investigación busca identificar las barreras más comunes en cada país, con el fin de evidenciar la situación actual y facilitar la búsqueda de soluciones para mejorar el acceso de los pacientes con epilepsia en la región. Metodología: Para la recolección de datos, se propone utilizar una encuesta en español creada por el equipo del Centro de Epilepsia de la Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá, la cual se diseñará en una versión en español. Esta abarca las siguientes áreas de acceso: 1. programas de salud, legislación y derechos humanos; 2. percepción cultural; 3. servicios y tecnología; 4. recursos humanos y tecnológicos; y 5. información sobre los diferentes servicios de epilepsia. Este instrumento será enviado a todos los países de ALC, a través de una convocatoria pública por email, de la base de datos de especialistas en epilepsia por el equipo del Centro de Epilepsia. La encuesta deberá ser respondida oficialmente por neurólogos y especialistas en epilepsia de diferentes niveles de atención. Resultados esperados: Generar una mejor descripción de las barreras que experimentan los neurólogos y los especialistas en epilepsia, sobre los servicios de epilepsia en ALC, contribuyendo de esta forma, al conocimiento universal sobre este tema. Finalmente, formularemos recomendaciones para apoyar y mejorar el acceso a servicios de epilepsia en la región, y estamos convencidos que esta investigación aportará de manera significativa a las instituciones, para implementar mejoras en la atención de los pacientes que sufren esta enfermedad.

Current research needs to be updated, with the most available data being over ten years old. This gap in up-to-date, comprehensive data challenges the development of effective strategies to enhance regional healthcare access. This article describes the perspectives of general neurology and epilepsy specialists from LAC on these issues. Their insights are essential for evaluating regional progress and identifying treatment gaps and challenges epilepsy patients face, particularly regarding adequate treatment access. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 15 questions distributed to neurologists and epilepsy specialists in the LAC region by mail or in person. The survey focused on healthcare access for people with epilepsy in the area. To analyze the data, associations between categorical variables were assessed using the Fisher Exact test. Results: Information was obtained from 105 clinicians, including 62.9% epilepsy specialists and 37.1% neurologists from South America (72.38%) and Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean (26.67%). Antiseizure medications are generally available throughout LAC. However, some less commonly available options include brivaracetam (42.9%), ethosuximide (23.8%), and perampanel (19%) in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Venezuela. The most frequently cited challenges in accessing antiseizure medications were high costs (78.1%) and low availability of brand-name drugs (53.3%). Discussion: Overall, LAC has experienced advancements in the availability of diagnostic services and the number of healthcare professionals specializing in epilepsy care. However, this availability remains unevenly distributed between countries and within urban and rural areas. While antiseizure medications are generally accessible, certain drugs remain inconsistently available across the region. Barriers to adequate treatment include high costs, inadequate healthcare coverage, and medication shortages due to supply chain issues and regulatory hurdles. Additionally, patients need more access to information about treatments and concerns regarding the quality of generics.
