The contributions of Porro and Sänger to the success of the operation are also described, as well as the extraperitoneal techniques and the segmentary cesarean surgery. Finally, the current techniques and indications for this surgical procedure are discussed.Se presenta un recuento histórico de la operación cesárea desde la antigüedad hasta la era contemporánea. Se plantea la evolución de su técnica quirúrgica, el impacto de la anestesia y la antisepsia en su desarrollo ulterior, y la reducción de la mortalidad perinatal con el descubrimiento de los antibióticos y la ultrasonografía. Se describen las contribuciones de Sänger al éxito de la operación, así como las técnicas extraperitoneales y la cesárea segmentaria.
