Description
Summary:Work is an essential activity for human beings which affects their well-being in both positive or negative ways depending on the conditions in which it is done, taking into account that precarious or inadequate working conditions generate accidents and occupational diseases. Work accidents are a major problem worldwide, being greater in number and importance all around developing countries. Objective: Identify and quantify the trends of occupational accidents presented in Colombia in workers affiliated with the General System of Occupational Risks over a period of ten years (2004-2014). Methodology: A descriptive study was carried out by analyzing the epidemiological indicators and the outcoming information from the records of occupational accidents in workers affiliated to the Labor eneRisks Gral system, taking into account the thirty-two (32) departments of the country, the seventeen (17) economic activities of ISIC rev.3 and the four (4) risk levels. Results: Occupational accidents in Colombia increased during the time this study was carried out. The departments that showed higher accident rates, mortality and lethality, do not have a large amount of workforce and are mainly engaged in economic activities such as agriculture, fishing, mining and quarrying as well as those associated with construction. Additionally, it was found that some economic activities with high labor accidents rates, such as agriculture and fishing, are in level 1 risk class, in which describe a level of dangerousness as minimal. Conclusions: It is necessary to make changes in the prevention and promotion of occupational health in the country, in which some preventive policies are implemented, even more focused on economic activities and departments with high rates of occupational accidents.
